Resolutions
It’s the time of year we all love: resolution season!
Now is when we change our personalities overnight.
On December 31, I might drink zero water, beat myself up over every small mistake, and always stay on Instagram right up until bed.
Starting January 1?
A gallon of water daily! Positive affirmations every morning! Instagram DELETED FROM MY PHONE!
The intent behind these resolutions is good. They get us thinking about how we’d like to change.
But lofty goals like this don’t usually work, because they’re unrealistic.
If I don’t drink enough water, there’s a reason. I forget to, or I don’t like water, or I’m stressed and it’s one too many things to think about.
I need to overcome these barriers, and that doesn’t happen right away.
So, if you want to set a goal for the new year (and you don’t have to!), consider setting a specific goal that you’re almost 100% sure you can accomplish.
Then, when you accomplish it, reflect on what worked and make a new goal. This next goal should be just as realistic as the first one.
Keep making new goals until you’re satisfied with your progress.
If you ever don’t meet a goal, that means it was too ambitious. Reflect on what got in your way, then go back and choose a goal you’re more likely to meet.
Using this process, you can achieve your big new year’s resolutions. It’ll just take more than a day.
If you’re setting a new year’s resolution, how can you make it as specific and attainable as possible?
I’d love to hear!
